When I started The Victory Bell in early 2022, I did so with the goal of continuing to tell the stories of Valparaiso’s student-athletes, coaches and alumni. It’s the goal I set when I started writing for The Torch and broadcasting for WVUR in 1999. It’s the goal I carried with me when I began my professional career as a sports correspondent with the Northwest Indiana Times.
The goal hasn’t changed in the last 24 years and it certainly hasn’t changed in the last 20 months since The Victory Bell got off the ground. The site is here and it’s not going anywhere. That said, the site needs a little bit more.
Effective Sept. 15, 2023, the price of The Victory Bell will increase to $5.99/month or $59.99/year.
I had no idea what to charge for the site when I first started, so I charged the bare minimum. The lowest that Substack (the hosting platform for TVB) allows content providers to charge is $5/month, so that’s what I went with. I figured $49.99/year would work as a yearly subscription as it would result in roughly 16 percent savings for the entire year and 16 is a number that has meant a little something to Valparaiso fans.
I launched The Victory Bell with the hopes that I’d be able to equal the income that I left behind when I made the decision to leave NWI for this venture. It’s been close, but not quite there. I’m hoping you’ll understand the reason for this modest increase. For monthly subscribers, the cost will come out to $11.88 more per year. For yearly subscribers, the increase by $10 to $59.99 still represents a 16.5 percent savings (I think, math is not really my strong suit).
The last 20 months have been the most professionally rewarding of my career. I’ve been honored to share 272 stories and 21 podcast episodes under The Victory Bell umbrella and I can’t wait to share more.
For those that are currently free subscribers and are considering becoming paid subscribers, I guess now is as good a time as any to say that the price increase doesn’t take effect until Sept. 15, so subscribe today to lock in the cheaper yearly price.
I hope to see you at a Valparaiso sporting event this season. Please come and say hi. This is going to be an exciting season and The Victory Bell will be there every step of the way.
