Quarterback carousel keeps spinning for Valpo
FB: Tyler likely to start on Saturday, marking seventh straight game with different starter
Caron Tyler took a hard hit late in last Saturday’s game against St. Thomas that left the redshirt freshman quarterback down on the ground in pain.
Rowan Keefe, a redshirt sophomore signal caller, immediately picked up a football and started warming up on the sideline. After a few throws he made his way through a crowd of teammates and was ready to run onto the field as Tyler slowly walked off.
Wanting to use the opportunity to get a few snaps for one of his younger players, Valparaiso coach Landon Fox instead tapped true freshman Clayton Mains to take the field.
Mains took a hard hit on the sideline several plays later, losing his helmet in the process. Keefe again made his way toward the field, expecting that he’d be the next quarterback up. Tyler also sprinted down the sideline, telling anyone that would listen that he was good to go back in the game.
Instead, Michael Mansaray appeared to be called on to run a version of Valparaiso’s wildcat offense before Fox thought better of it and called a timeout, allowing Mains to remain in the game.
All of this occurred as Valparaiso’s latest starting quarterback, Mikey Appel Jr., was back in the locker room feeling the effects of a late hit that knocked him out of the game, if not longer.
It was just another week in the life of Valparaiso’s quarterback carousel. A carousel that is starting to take on a life of its own.
