Paul, your human interest stories are so good. It brings a more human side to everyone and Emil here in particular. Pulitzer quality.

For so long fans have been wondering……. now we know. Finally. Thanks. All the best to Emil. He’s fought through so much off the court, and now he has to fight through all that baggage just to get back on it. Shows great character.

As an aside, your article would have been welcomed much earlier in the season by every VUBB fan. Not criticizing you at all. Indeed, thanks for finally getting this out. But what the heck took so long to clear the air on Emil’s continual absence from the line up? VU has to do a better job of properly assessing situations and making the right decisions regarding the information they release. And hiding behind HIPPA is a cop out.

Again, great to read your account.

I appreciate that. I'll say this, Valpo told us (the media) that it was medical related and not COVID. There was no other information. I've reported that. It was Emil's decision whether or not to tell his story and that's a decision that he made after he was cleared to return to the court. Guessing he wanted to get back with the team before he shared his story. I'd heard the rumors of Lyme disease earlier in the year, but something like that, that's for Emil to determine when he tells that story.

Valpo, as most schools do, has a long standing rule of not making injured players available to the media. I took a shot by asking if Emil was interested in talking and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he was potentially going to be in uniform on Wednesday.

I don't have any issue with the way Valpo handled this. I knew, and reported he was out due to a medical situation that wasn't COVID. When the time was right, Emil agreed to an interview and it was facilitated by the school. 2,000 words later (which is something I never would've been able to do in November) and now the story is out.

Thanks for the reply, Paul. The fact that it is now out in the open is great. Thank you for pursuing and communicating it. And it tells an even more compelling story about an outstanding young man. But, IMO, the cryptic, you-have-to-read-between-the-lines releases of information by the university invariably lead to some negative speculation (you just have to check the Fan Forum) that does a disservice to the program, the university and especially the kid. Glad you got it out there.
