Allia Von Schlegell (left) and Isabella Anderson both committed to Valparaiso in 2024. The pair are now on campus and ready to begin their collegiate careers.

Allia Von Schlegell wasn’t sure what to think earlier this spring when she got word that former Valparaiso women’s basketball coach Mary Evans was no longer with the program.

The Downers Grove native had verbally committed to Evans and the Beacons last August and now her future was suddenly in flux. Not sure what was going on, she reached out to the one other person who was in her position: fellow Valparaiso commit Isabella Anderson.

Anderson, a South Dakota native, verbally committed to Valparaiso last October and the pair had struck up something of a friendship after they’d met during a recruiting visit.

With confusion as to which assistant coaches would remain at Valpo, or which head coach would be coming in, Von Schlegell and Anderson leaned on each other.
