Fiona Connolly was sitting in her hotel room in Cleveland on the day after Thanksgiving when the Valparaiso senior guard received a peculiar request from the coaching staff.

The Beacons had just dropped their seventh straight game - this one was a 80-41 loss to Cleveland State - and the team was getting ready for dinner and what was sure to be an exhaustive film session.

Knowing the team morale was hanging on by a thread, first-year coach Courtney Boyd threw sanity out the window and embraced her inner “crazy” when she requested that the team dress warmly and come downstairs.

The players and coaches gathered in the lobby of the Holiday Inn Cleveland Clinic hotel and Boyd started to talk.
